AIDC meets the checkout: what we took away from the Newland Partner Event in Munich<\/h2>\n

In October 2026 we were in Munich as a sponsor of the Newland AIDC EMEA<\/a> Partner Event, alongside companies including Ingram Micro, SOTI, Jarltech, Brodit, Neway Distribution and Rosistem. We brought our cash drawers<\/a>, POS mounting<\/a> solutions and self-order kiosks, and spent the day with distributors, integrators and resellers from across Europe.<\/p>\n

The theme of the event was the future of AIDC \u2014 automatic identification and data capture, the family of technologies behind barcode scanners, mobile computers and RFID. What struck us, listening to the talks and talking at our table, is how quickly that world is merging with ours.<\/p>\n

Two hardware worlds that used to be separate<\/h2>\n

For years, AIDC and point-of-sale hardware were adjacent but distinct markets. Scanners, mobile computers and RFID readers belonged to logistics, warehousing and inventory. Cash drawers, printers and POS terminals belonged to the checkout.<\/p>\n

That separation no longer holds. A modern checkout station is an integrated assembly: a scanner, a POS terminal or tablet, a receipt printer, a payment terminal, a cash drawer and \u2014 holding it all together \u2014 mounts, arms and brackets. A self-checkout or self-order kiosk goes further: it contains scanning, payment, printing and often cash handling inside a single enclosure.<\/p>\n

In other words, AIDC devices have moved from the warehouse to the front of the store<\/strong>, and the question is no longer only “which scanner” but “how does it all fit together on the counter”.<\/p>\n

Integration is now the hard part<\/h2>\n

This was the single clearest message from the conversations in Munich. Selecting a scanner or a terminal has become relatively easy: the leading manufacturers all make good devices. What resellers and integrators struggle with is everything around the device.<\/p>\n

Where does the scanner sit so the operator doesn’t twist their wrist a thousand times a day? How do you mount a tablet POS so it can be turned toward the customer for payment and signature? How do you keep cables from turning the counter into a nest? How do you fit a cash drawer under a counter that was designed before any of this existed? And how do you make an installation that survives ten years of daily use in a supermarket?<\/p>\n

None of these are glamorous questions. All of them decide whether a project succeeds or generates support calls for the next five years. They are also, not coincidentally, the questions we get asked most often.<\/p>\n

The product that drew the most attention<\/h2>\n

If we needed proof that these two worlds have merged, it was on our table. The solution partners kept coming back to was our payment terminal stand with an integrated Newland barcode reader<\/strong> \u2014 a single mounted unit that lets the customer pay and, in the same movement, have a loyalty card or a smartphone barcode scanned.<\/p>\n

It sounds like a small thing. In practice it removes a step that every retailer with a loyalty programme deals with thousands of times a day: the awkward moment where the cashier has to reach for a separate scanner, or the customer has to hand over a phone, while the payment is already in progress. One mounted assembly, two functions, no extra counter space.<\/p>\n

That product is a small illustration of the wider point. Five years ago a payment terminal stand and a barcode reader would have been sold by two different suppliers, specified at two different moments, and integrated by whoever was unlucky enough to be on site. Today they are one object.<\/p>\n

Our self-order kiosk solutions<\/strong> drew the second wave of interest, for a related reason: a kiosk is the same convergence taken to its conclusion \u2014 scanning, payment, printing and often cash handling inside one enclosure.<\/p>\n

What we heard from partners<\/h2>\n

The partners at the event came from across EMEA and the wider world, and a few themes came up again and again.<\/p>\n

Availability beats specification.<\/strong> More than one partner told us the same thing: a device that ships next week beats a marginally better device that ships in three months. European stock has become a selection criterion in its own right, not a nice-to-have.<\/p>\n

Self-service keeps expanding beyond quick-service restaurants.<\/strong> The kiosk conversation is no longer only about fast food. Pharmacies, convenience retail, ticketing, logistics parcel points and events are all evaluating self-service, each with different requirements for scanning, payment and cash.<\/p>\n

Mounting is being specified earlier.<\/strong> Historically, mounts and brackets were the afterthought of a project \u2014 chosen after the devices, often in a hurry. Increasingly, integrators are specifying the mounting solution alongside the devices, because ergonomics and cable management are what the end customer actually notices every day.<\/p>\n

Where we fit<\/h2>\n

Events like Munich are useful precisely because they put those pieces next to each other. The counter of the near future will hold a scanner, a terminal, a payment device, a printer and a drawer \u2014 built by different manufacturers, expected to work as one product. Making that assembly reliable is the actual work.<\/p>\n
